Huge smiles and helping hands was the theme of this week’s Treasure Tuesday at the Someone Cares Kitchen. As our Crews size has grown we were able to devote our efforts to tutoring the students and helping out in the kitchen.
We were greeted with kindness when we showed up even though a few weeks had passed since our last visit to The Kitchen. One of the kids who we’ve spent some time tutoring in the past named Joshua even threw out a casual little “Hey Kev, How’s it going?” with an electrifying smile to accompany the greeting.
After saying hello to everyone, The Crew split up and got right to work. Some of us headed into the kitchen to help prepare meals for the youngsters to take home. While others spent time helping the students with some more complex math- mainly in the form of division and remainders. We were once again reminded of the show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader when to our surprise, we struggled a bit showing the kids how to correctly solve a problem with a remainder. After that was all squared away, we had the pleasure of hearing the students read a book about pirates to us. The kids are really excelling at a quick pace and it was awesome to see how stoked they were on it!
On the opposite side of the Kitchen, the other members of The Crew had finished up preparing the meals for the youngsters and moved onto organizing the kitchen. (*Good thing we played a lot of Tetris as kids, or this would have been a bit more difficult). Once all the chores had been taken care of, we were all rewarded with a puzzle to solve while letting our brains relax for a bit.
Overall, it was a very productive and enjoyable Treasure Tuesday session spent at Someone Cares. Work was done, good times were had, and the kids were excited. We hope you can join us for next week’s Treasure Tuesdays session.
