We recently caught up with local shredder and close friend, Spencer Pirdy to do a casual little Q&A session. Whether he’s serving up delicious eats at Bear Flag Fish Co. or tearing waves apart at The Wedge. Spence always has a huge smile on his face and an awesome outlook on life. Read on to see what he had to say in his edition of our Weekly Feature series:
Name: Spencer Pirdy
Place of Residence: Newport Beach
Current Jam: I like ozzy disco style music
Favorite Food: Bear Flag Fish Co.
Sponsors: Billabong, Smith, Surfside Sports
Ark: Tell us a little about yourself Spencer!
Spencer: I’m 23, living the dream, trying to stay healthy (although I’m sick at the moment), and surfing and working as hard as my a*s can!
A: What and/or where are some of the things you draw inspiration from?
S: I draw inspiration from people who work hard, people who have been through heavy sh*t and have persevered through it. Watching sports give me inspiration. Also good art/music and obviously insane surfing and surfers.
A: Since sessions are always better with friends. Who do you get psyched on when you get to surf with them?
S: I do. I find nothing better than having a good session with my brother and good buds. We laugh, make fun of each other, but most of all we push one another.
A: What is your favorite board to ride for your normal, day-to-day session?
S: Lately I’ve been having a lot of fun on four fins. They go fast and are great for airs and barrels.
A: Who are some of your favorite surfers, athletes, or all around RAD people you look up to?
S: Kobe Bryant, Bruce Irons, AI (RIP), Nathan Fletcher, Danny Fuller, Sion Milosky. Pretty much guys that push the level of surfing in big crazy waves, and Kobe because I’ve been watching him since he was a rookie and he is nuts!
A: Tell us about your most memorable, funny, awkward…(fill in the blank) encounter you’ve had over the years while surfing?
S: Probably my 22nd birthday. There was a good west swell and I went down to Blacks Beach in La Jolla and surfed for 7 hours straight all by myself. It was insane and was one of the most satisfying feelings I’ve ever experienced.
A: Where is your all time favorite break to surf, (and this can be anywhere)?
S: Blacks Beach, La Jolla
A: If you had to pick one or the other for the rest of eternity, would you rather surf a big hollow beach break or a point break?
S: Hollow beach break without a doubt.
A: What would you consider to be the most rewarding, and also the most frustrating park of surfing?
S: Probably mother nature. We rely on her in our sport. Sometimes she disappoints and things can be a bit depressing, but when she dishes out the good it’s the best thing in the world.
A: Is there any specific surf trip that sticks out in your mind more than others you’ve been on over the years? If so, where was it, and will you tell us a little bit about it?
S: Fiji, 3 years ago with my buddy Joe Riggio. It was a blast. We sailed over 600 miles and got to see things that most people will never see. The people were amazing and we were able to fully soak up the culture. The waves were pretty amazing too!
A: What are a few of your other hobbies you like to do, when waves are nowhere to be found, or you have a bit of extra free time?
S: Well I work at Bear Flag Fish Co. and Blisss Magazine. I love to write, do yoga a little, and my bother is a trainer now so I train with him a lot. I also love to eat so that’s definitely number one on the hobby list.
A: If some random dude walked up to you on the street and told you that you could go anywhere in the world, all expenses paid for a month. Where would you voyage off to?
S: Depends on the time of year, but winter I would say North Shore of Oahu and summertime I would say Mainland Mexico.
A: Here’s the time for a quick little “who’s better who’s best” in your eyes. If you could please answer as quickly as possible we’d appreciate it!
*Spencer’s answers are in RED

- Ozzy Wright or Cory Lopez? – Cory
- Jordy Smith or Dane Reynolds? – Dane
- Dusty Payne or Mitch Colbourne? – Mitch

A: Thanks much Spence. Any last words?
