With the completion of this years final beach cleanup, the Ark Crew felt it was time for Treasure Tuesdays to undergo a bit of a transformation and shift the focus of our efforts. Now that summer has turned into fall and the kids have headed back to school we knew it wasn’t going to be long before the after school tutoring sessions started up again at Think Together. So, once things were all wrapped up at Ark HQ for the day we made our way over to Think Together – excited and unsure of what to expect.
The minute we arrived at Think Together the students greeted us with big smiles and friendly “hellos.” Not wasting any time we quickly reacquainted ourselves with Matthew (the same program leader we worked with last year,) and his 4th grade team, The Marshmallows. The students’ energy level was through the roof and if it’s any indicator of what’s to come… we are definitely in for an interesting semester! Nonetheless we were excited to be back in the classroom as it reminds us of the days when our imaginations were constantly conceiving all kinds of imaginative ideas.
We spent a majority of the Treasure Tuesdays tutoring session helping the students with a language arts project that had been assigned to them. The task was to write figures of speech with the sentence structure: hyperbole – simile – metaphor – personification. After that it was up to the children to identify each piece in a different example. Not the easiest of tasks, but fortunately we work with great students and they tackled the assignment like champs.
One thing we noticed during this weeks tutoring session was the extent of our rusty Spanish skills, which could use some brushing up. This became rather evident when we started using Spanish translations while helping the students with their language arts project. It was slightly hard for us to define what the different pieces of the lesson meant in Spanish, then translate them back into English with new sentences. However, we put our minds to work and were able to successfully get the job done which is always a great feeling. (plus it was a little inspiration to get reacquainted with our Spanish grammar skills)
Before we knew it the students were packing up to head home for the day and we were saying our goodbyes. We would definitely declare the first Treasure Tuesdays tutoring session a success, as it’s always fun to help the younger students. Their constant laughter and unbelievably high levels of energy can’t help but make us smile. Oh, and we really enjoy the countless non-school related questions they have for us.
