Welcome back to another round of Treasure Tuesdays! With Thanksgiving just around the corner and the holiday spirit floating around in the air. It was no surprise to us when we showed up at the Someone Cares Kitchen to find the students had been assigned Thanksgiving themed homework!
We began helping them with an exercise where they had to put their symbol recognition and writing skills to the test. There were 4 different lines of symbols and corresponding letters. Once the students had figured out all the letters, it spelled out 4 different types of Thanksgiving pies: Apple, blueberry, cherry, and our favorite- pumpkin.
Two of our friends were adamantly telling us how much they liked pie and when asked which of the four types was their favorites, they were certain a combo pie would be the best. They went on to tell us that an apple/blueberry/cherry/pumpkin pie is their favorite. Well we’ve never seen or heard of such a delicacy before, so naturally we had to discover more about this creative hybrid pie. The students continued on to say the pie would be “as long as the classroom” (about 15 feet). But it was unfortunate, that neither us nor the students were pie chefs and could not bring such a culinary innovation to life.
In addition to the culinary innovation, one of the highlights of visiting the Someone Cares Kitchen & After School Tutoring Program was seeing the overwhelming amount of people who have volunteered to help serve food this Thanksgiving. We were unaware of how rapidly the volunteer positions fill up, and wish we would’ve planned a little further in advance. But we were still stoked to know that there will be more than enough hands on deck this Thursday.
All in all we got some good smiles out of this weeks Treasure Tuesdays & some potential Thanksgiving culinary innovation!
