We’re starting to get the hang of this whole tutoring thing and the kids seem to be diggin’ it too. So Treasure Tuesdays was once again spent at the Someone Cares Kitchen putting in some quality time with their after school tutoring program.
As usual the kids were all smiles and high fives when we showed up which is always refreshing to see. They couldn’t wait for us to begin helping them take care of their nightly agenda and wanted to get right to it. This week’s activities consisted mainly of number line counting and word unscrambling trickery.
Not only is it a rewarding feeling to be helping these kids out with some tutoring. It’s also pretty fun to get back in the mix of things and gauge how far our brains have progressed over the years. One of the cooler parts is being able to relate to the students by realizing that we were in the same boat, learning the same concepts, and doing the same exercises as they are- not all that long ago.
But the highlight of the week was when one of our students caught a little error we made, and called us on it! Luckily we were able to correct it in time, and play it off with a quick little uh ohhhhh smile. This shows us that our tutoring efforts are having an actual effect on these youngsters and that they really are learning the material we’re helping them with.
It’s rather rewarding to see how eager these young students are to learn, and the drive they exhibit is one the major qualities that will continue to bring us back to the Someone Cares Kitchen.
